Only the best Imperial pilots got selected to fly a Defender, pilots who had survived many TIE engagements, making them even more dangerous; any TIE pilot who could survive that many fights in the fragile fighters were the best of the best. Star Wars Starfighter Types Full Of PowerfulThe Star Wars universe is full of powerful starships, ones that make the titanic tussles among the stars so much fun. While there are cool ships of all sorts, some of the fans favorite ships are the starfighters. They differ greatly in design and power, with some being the top of their field and others being little more than laser fodder. Built by Incom, the company that would eventually manufacture the X-Wing, it was a heavily armed and armored fighter and made a huge difference in the battles it was deployed in. Many a clones life was saved by the appearance of some ARC-170s on the field. The fighter was crewed by a pilot, two gunners, and an astromech and was equipped with a hyperdrive. They could operate on their own for extended periods of time and were feared by the Separatist forces. It was built by the Rebel Alliance to supplement their fleet; the Alliance had few capital ships and needed something that packed a punch. A squadron of B-Wings was a match for Imperial capital ships, heavily armed and armored enough to take the fight directly to them. A group of TIE fighters of similar size to a group of B-Wings could take the Rebel fighters down with few losses, severely limiting how effective the B-Wings were. However, it really proved its worth during the war against the Empire. The early Rebel Alliance got their hands on surplus Y-Wings and put them to great use. One of the fastest fighters in the history of the galaxy, the A-Wing gave the Alliance an interceptor that could fly circles around anything the Empire put into the field. However, it had some major drawbacks- the ships were notoriously finicky and hard to repair, spending nearly as much time in the hangar after engagements as it did fighting, they were quite fragile even though they had shields, and didnt pack that much of a punch. It was too specialized and expensive to be of much use to the Alliance. The money spent to keep them in the fight would have served better elsewhere. The TIE Interceptor had all of these problems but it made up for them with its blistering speed, excellent maneuverability, and its four powerful laser cannons. On top of that, instead of the boxy wings of the TIEIn, the Interceptors long wings that tapered to a point and were open in the middle, giving the pilot better visibility to port and starboard. However, if it had been introduced earlier and in greater numbers, things may have been different for the Empire. While they were fast and maneuverable, they were also notoriously weak, not able to get much of a beating. TIEIns were meant to attack en masse, overwhelming foes with numbers, their powerful dual laser cannons cutting down their foes. The Empire was spending most of its money on capital ships and superweapons, so the cheapness and ease of mass production of the TIEIn appealed to them but it probably wasnt the best decision they made, seeing as how the Rebels fighter forces were their greatest asset. The brainchild of Chiss Grand Admiral Thrawn, the TIE Defender took a page from the fighters of the Rebel Allianceit was heavily armed and armored, had shields, and a hyperdrive.
